There once was an ugly duckling
With feathers all stubby and brown
And the other birds,
in so many words, said
"Get out of town!

And she left with a quack
And a waddle and a quack
In a flurry of eiderdown
That poor little ugly duckling
Went wandering far and near

All through the wintertime
She hid herself away
Afraid to show her face
Afraid of what others might say

In her lonely clump of wheat
Till a flock of swans spied her there

I'm not such an ugly duckling

And I go with no quack, not a quack
And no waddle or a quack
But I glide and I whistle
And a snowy white back

못생긴 새끼 오리가 있었는데
깃털은 뭉툭하고 갈색이었어
다른 새들은 그 오리에게
계속해서 이렇게 말했어
"여기서 나가!
나가, 나가, 꺼지라고!"
꽥꽥 뒤뚱뒤뚱
솜털을 휘날리며
오리는 떠났어
불쌍한 그 새끼 오리는
이곳저곳을 헤맸는데
다른 새들은 그 오리에게
계속해서 이렇게 말했어
"여기서 나가!
나가, 나가, 꺼지라고!"
겨울 내내
오리는 몸을 숨겼어
모습을 보이는 게 두려웠고
무슨 말을 들을지 두려웠어
겨울 내내
짚단에 숨어 지내던 오리를
백조 무리가 발견하고는
입을 모아 말했어
"넌 정말 예쁜 백조구나"
"저요? 제가 백조라고요?"
난 미운 오리 새끼가 아냐
뭉툭한 갈색 깃털도 없어
사실, 다른 새들은
계속해서 이렇게 말했어
"여기서 제일 멋져!
멋져, 멋져, 제일 멋져!"
꽥꽥거리지 않아
뒤뚱거리지 않아
미끄러지듯 헤엄치다
눈처럼 하얀 깃털로
우아하게 높이 날아올라
누가 미운 오리 새끼라는 거야
난 더 이상 미운 오리 새끼가 아냐
